Conch Jewelry
Solid 14K gold and implant grade titanium pieces for the conch. The placement that anchors a curated ear.
The conch is the broad cartilage bowl in the centre of the ear. It is the largest single placement on the ear, and the one most often chosen as a focal piece. A conch piercing carries jewelry well, holds light beautifully, and visually balances multiple smaller piercings around it.
At Piercing Lab Calgary, every conch piercing is performed with a sterile single use needle and fitted with implant grade titanium or solid gold from the first appointment.
Why fit and styling matter
The conch is the placement that defines an ear. Unlike helix or tragus, where jewelry plays a supporting role in a curation, the conch typically holds the centerpiece. Four considerations shape every conch fitting:
Initial bar length. The conch sits in a thick section of cartilage. Initial bars are slightly longer than helix or tragus piercings to accommodate the deeper anatomy and 4 to 8 weeks of swelling.
Stone size and visual weight. Because the conch is the focal point of the ear, larger stones (3mm to 6mm) and statement cluster pieces work where they would overwhelm a helix or tragus. A small stud often reads as too quiet in this placement.
Centerpiece logic. A single deliberate conch piece visually anchors any surrounding helix, flat, or lobe piercings. Choose the conch first, then build outward.
Statement piece, single anchor. The conch performs best when it is the strongest visual element on the ear. Layering or stacking is uncommon here. One well chosen piece does more than several smaller ones.
Jewelry material
We exclusively use implant grade titanium and solid gold suitable for long term wear and healing cartilage piercings.
Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136). The industry default for fresh piercings. Hypoallergenic and proven biocompatible. Anodised colour finishes remain safe in healing tissue.
Solid 14K or 18K gold. Nickel free alloyed gold for both fresh and healed piercings. Niori Jewelry, our in house line, is solid 14K gold across the full range.
Fashion jewelry materials are not used for new piercings at our studio.
Placement variations
The conch has two named regions, each suited to slightly different jewelry styles:
Inner conch. The deep bowl in the centre of the ear, between the helix and the ear canal. The most common conch placement. Holds large studs, statement clusters, and halo settings exceptionally well.
Outer conch. The flatter cartilage area between the helix rim and the inner conch bowl. Less commonly pierced, but visually striking when paired with an inner conch or with a hoop that wraps from outer conch to helix.
We assess your ear before any piercing decision and will suggest the conch region that suits your anatomy and styling intent.
Healing and aftercare
Conch piercings need 6 to 12 months to fully heal. The outside may look settled before the inside has finished, so aftercare runs the full window.
First 8 weeks. Saline rinse twice daily. Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing. Phones, earbuds, and over ear headphones all apply pressure to the conch and should be limited during early healing.
Weeks 4 to 8. Free downsize appointment with any Niori Jewelry purchase. Conch piercings often benefit from downsizing because the initial bar protrudes more in this placement than in others.
Months 3 to 12. Continue saline rinses as the inside of the piercing continues to remodel.

Book your conch piercing at Piercing Lab Calgary
Every appointment includes anatomy assessment, sterile single use needle, implant grade or solid gold jewelry from your first wear, and a one on one walkthrough of healing and aftercare. We recommend a consultation before any conch piercing, since the placement is too prominent to plan without seeing the jewelry on your ear first.
Frequently asked
How long does a conch piercing take to heal?
Most conch piercings need 6 to 12 months. The outside may look settled earlier, but the inside continues to remodel for the full window.
Why does the conch hurt more than other ear piercings?
The conch is one of the thicker cartilage areas in the ear, so the piercing itself takes a moment longer than a helix or lobe. With a sterile needle and proper technique, most clients describe the sensation as a brief pressure rather than sharp pain. Aftercare and healing are the larger commitment.
Can I wear earbuds or headphones with a new conch piercing?
Earbuds press directly against the conch and should be avoided for at least the first 8 weeks. Over ear headphones rest against the outer ear and can also apply pressure, depending on fit. If you depend on headphones daily, plan for the healing window before booking.
What size jewelry suits a conch piercing?
Conch piercings carry larger jewelry well. Stones from 3mm to 6mm look balanced, and cluster or halo settings perform especially well because the conch gives them room to read clearly. Smaller pieces under 2mm tend to look lost in this placement.
Can I get a hoop in my conch?
Yes, but typically only after the piercing is fully healed (12 months or more). Hoops in conch placements are stunning but apply more movement and weight during healing than a stud or threadless end, which increases risk of irritation. Start with a stud, switch to a hoop later.
Inner conch or outer conch, which should I choose?
Inner conch is more common and supports the widest range of statement jewelry. Outer conch is less commonly pierced but creates a distinctive look, especially when paired with an inner conch or with a wrap style hoop. Your ear anatomy may favour one over the other, which we will assess during consultation.
Do you offer consultation before a conch piercing?
Yes, and for conch piercings we strongly recommend it. The conch is the most prominent placement on the ear, and the piece you choose will define how the rest of your ear reads. A 20 to 30 minute consultation lets you see jewelry options on your specific anatomy before committing.
Can I bring my own jewelry for a new conch piercing?
For healed conch piercings we install outside jewelry that meets our material standards. For new piercings we use only studio supplied implant grade titanium or solid gold.
