Rook Jewelry
Solid 14K gold and implant grade titanium pieces for the rook. The inner ear ridge that reads as a vertical accent.
The rook is the cartilage ridge inside the upper ear, between the inner conch and the forward helix. It is one of the more anatomy-dependent placements in the ear: not every ear has a defined rook ridge, and not every defined ridge is thick enough to pierce safely.
At Piercing Lab Calgary, every rook piercing is performed with a sterile single use needle and fitted with implant grade titanium or solid gold from the first appointment.
Why fit and styling matter
The rook is a vertical piercing through a fold of cartilage, which makes it structurally different from every other placement. The jewelry sits in a curved channel, which is why curved barbells are the standard rather than threadless ends or straight studs. Four considerations:
Anatomy first. Not every ear has a defined rook ridge. We assess before booking. A poorly anatomy-matched rook piercing migrates or rejects within months. If your anatomy does not support the piercing, we will say so rather than force it.
Curved barbell standard. Initial rook piercings use a small curved barbell because the cartilage fold sits at an angle. Straight bars and threadless ends sit awkwardly in the rook channel and increase irritation.
Small jewelry only. Rook pieces are typically 6 to 8mm curved barbells with end balls or gem ends from 2mm to 4mm. The placement is internal and partially obscured by surrounding cartilage; larger pieces read as out of proportion.
Vertical reading. The rook reads as a vertical accent inside the ear, often paired with horizontal placements like helix or tragus to create visual rhythm.
Jewelry material
We exclusively use implant grade titanium and solid gold suitable for long term wear and healing cartilage piercings.
Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136). The industry default for fresh rook piercings. All initial rook piercings use a small implant grade titanium curved barbell.
Solid 14K or 18K gold. Available for fully healed rook piercings, typically 12 months or longer. Solid gold clickers and decorative curved barbells become available once healing is complete.
Fashion jewelry materials are not used for new piercings at our studio.
Placement variations
The rook is essentially a single named placement, but jewelry style creates two variations:
Curved barbell rook. The standard, with small ball or gem ends on each side of the cartilage fold. The most common and lowest-irritation choice for both fresh and healed wear.
Clicker rook. A small hinged clicker ring worn through the rook. Only for fully healed piercings, typically 12 months or longer. Reads more decorative than the curved barbell but requires more daily care.
Healing and aftercare
Rook piercings need 6 to 12 months to fully heal. Some take longer if the cartilage fold is tight, which restricts blood flow to the healing channel.
First 8 weeks. Saline rinse twice daily. Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing. Sleep pressure is the most common cause of rook healing complications.
Weeks 4 to 8. Free downsize appointment with any Niori Jewelry purchase. The rook benefits from downsizing once swelling settles, since the initial bar protrudes more than the final size.
Months 3 to 12. Continue saline rinses as the inside of the piercing continues to remodel. Avoid switching jewelry yourself during the full healing window.

Book your rook piercing at Piercing Lab Calgary
Every appointment includes anatomy assessment, sterile single use needle, implant grade titanium curved barbell from your first wear, and a one on one walkthrough of healing and aftercare. We recommend a brief consultation before booking a rook piercing, since the placement is more anatomy-dependent than most others in the ear.
Frequently asked
How long does a rook piercing take to heal?
Most rook piercings need 6 to 12 months to fully heal. Some take longer if the cartilage fold is tight, which restricts blood flow to the healing channel.
Why does the rook need a curved barbell?
The rook passes through a cartilage fold at an angle. A straight bar sits awkwardly in the channel and creates pressure points. A small curved barbell follows the natural curve of the cartilage and reduces irritation significantly during healing.
Can I get a rook piercing if my anatomy is tight?
Possibly, but we assess in person before recommending. Tight rook anatomy heals slower, has higher rejection risk, and is more sensitive to jewelry size. We may recommend a different placement if your anatomy is borderline.
Does a rook piercing hurt more than other cartilage piercings?
The rook is one of the firmer cartilage areas in the ear, so the piercing itself is slightly slower than helix or flat. Most clients describe it as a sustained pressure rather than a sharp pinch. Pain tolerance varies significantly.
Can I switch to a clicker after my rook heals?
Yes, after the full 12 month healing window. Clickers in healed rook piercings look beautiful and add a decorative element, but switching too early dramatically increases rejection risk.
Will sleeping on my rook piercing cause problems?
Yes, especially during the first 8 weeks. The rook sits in a position that contacts the pillow directly for side sleepers. Most rook healing issues come from sleep pressure, which is why we recommend back-sleeping or a travel pillow with a centre cutout during early healing.
What is the difference between a rook and a daith piercing?
Both are inner ear cartilage piercings, but the rook is the cartilage ridge above the daith. The daith curves through the innermost cartilage fold near the ear canal, while the rook sits higher and reads more as a vertical accent.
Can I bring my own jewelry for a new rook piercing?
For healed rook piercings we install outside jewelry that meets our material standards. For new piercings we use only studio supplied implant grade titanium curved barbells or solid gold.
