Lobe Jewelry
Solid 14K gold and implant grade titanium pieces for the lobe. The placement that supports the widest range of jewelry in the ear.
The lobe is the soft, fleshy lower section of the ear. It is the first piercing most people get, the easiest to heal, and the most versatile in what it can wear. Because the lobe is soft tissue rather than cartilage, it heals fast and tolerates a wider variety of jewelry styles than any other placement in the ear, from classic minimal studs to dangles, drops, hoops, and stacked layered looks.
At Piercing Lab Calgary, every lobe piercing is performed with a sterile single use needle and fitted with implant grade titanium or solid gold from the first appointment.
Why fit and styling matter
The lobe is the most permissive placement in the ear. It heals in roughly a tenth of the time of cartilage piercings, and once healed, it can wear almost anything: drops, dangles, charms, chains, statement studs, hoops, and stacked layered curations that would be impossible elsewhere on the ear. Four considerations shape every lobe styling decision:
Stacking opportunity. The lobe is the only placement in the ear that comfortably stacks vertically. Two, three, four, or five lobe piercings spaced 4 to 6mm apart create a climbing ladder effect that anchors most modern curated ears. Each piercing in the stack can wear a different jewelry style.
Healed lobes wear everything. A fully healed lobe (typically 2 to 3 months after piercing) opens up the entire jewelry catalogue. Drops, dangles, hoops, charms, chains, and statement pieces that would be unsafe on cartilage placements wear beautifully on the lobe.
Weight tolerance. Lobes are the only ear placement that can carry larger drops and chains without pulling on healing tissue. This is why almost every drop earring you see in fashion lives on the lobe.
Playful by design. The lobe is the placement where personality shows up. While conch demands restraint and helix calls for considered layering, the lobe rewards experimentation. Heart shapes, charms, mixed metals, asymmetric pairs, statement drops, all of these belong on the lobe and only on the lobe.
Jewelry material
We exclusively use implant grade titanium and solid gold suitable for long term wear and healing piercings.
Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136). The industry default for fresh piercings. Hypoallergenic and proven biocompatible. Anodised colour finishes remain safe in healing tissue.
Solid 14K or 18K gold. Nickel free alloyed gold for both fresh and healed piercings. Niori Jewelry, our in house line, is solid 14K gold across the full range.
Fashion jewelry materials are not used for new piercings at our studio.
Placement variations
The lobe has more named variations than any other placement in the ear, because it supports stacking and styling in ways the rest of the ear cannot:
First lobe. The classic lobe piercing through the centre of the fleshy lower ear. The starting point for most curated ears and the most common piercing performed worldwide.
Second lobe. A second piercing 4 to 6mm above the first lobe. The foundation of any stacked lobe curation.
Third and fourth lobe. Additional piercings climbing up the lobe toward the cartilage line. Each new piercing requires space. Most ear anatomies support up to four lobe piercings comfortably.
Upper lobe. The piercing closest to the cartilage transition, sometimes performed at a slight angle to follow the curve of the ear.
Stacked lobes. Two or more lobe piercings worn as a coordinated curation, planned together rather than added one at a time. We sketch the full stack on your ear before piercing the first.
We assess your lobe anatomy before any piercing decision. Lobe thickness, length, and shape all affect how many piercings the placement can comfortably support.
Healing and aftercare
Lobe piercings need 2 to 3 months to fully heal. This is significantly faster than cartilage piercings because the lobe is soft tissue rather than cartilage.
First 4 weeks. Saline rinse twice daily. Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing. Tie back long hair to avoid catching on the jewelry.
Weeks 4 to 6. Free downsize appointment with any Niori Jewelry purchase. Lobes settle quickly, so downsizing happens earlier than cartilage placements.
Months 2 to 3. Continue saline rinses as the inside continues to remodel. Once fully healed, the lobe opens up to the full range of jewelry styles, including drops and statement pieces.

Book your lobe piercing at Piercing Lab Calgary
Every appointment includes anatomy assessment, sterile single use needle, implant grade or solid gold jewelry from your first wear, and a one on one walkthrough of healing and aftercare. For stacked lobe planning, we recommend a curated ear consultation to sketch the full stack on your specific anatomy before piercing the first.
Frequently asked
How long does a lobe piercing take to heal?
Most lobe piercings need 2 to 3 months to fully heal. This is significantly faster than cartilage piercings because the lobe is soft tissue rather than cartilage.
How many lobe piercings can I get on one ear?
Most ear anatomies comfortably support up to four lobe piercings spaced 4 to 6mm apart. Anatomy varies, so we assess your specific lobe size and shape during consultation before recommending a stack count.
Can I get multiple lobe piercings in one appointment?
Yes, this is common. Two or three lobe piercings in one session is routine. Four or more in one session is anatomy dependent and we discuss the healing load before booking.
What is a stacked lobe curation?
A stacked lobe is two or more lobe piercings on the same ear, planned and pierced as a coordinated set rather than added one at a time over years. The spacing, sizing, and jewelry coordination is mapped out together so the finished look reads as one design rather than several individual piercings.
When can I wear drops and dangles on my lobe?
Once your lobe piercing is fully healed, typically at the 2 to 3 month mark. Wearing drops too early applies downward weight that can stretch the still-healing channel.
What is the minimum age for a lobe piercing?
We pierce lobes from age 7 with a parent or guardian present and consenting. Below that age, we typically recommend waiting until the child can confidently care for the piercing themselves.
Can I get my lobes pierced and immediately wear my own earrings?
No. New lobe piercings need to settle for at least 6 to 8 weeks before swapping jewelry. We use studio supplied implant grade titanium or solid gold from the initial piercing, and you switch to your own jewelry at the downsize appointment or later.
What happens if I have an existing lobe piercing that closed or got infected?
We can re-pierce a closed lobe in the same location or slightly above or below, depending on scar tissue. For a recently irritated piercing, we recommend giving it 6 to 12 weeks to fully heal before re-piercing rather than forcing jewelry back through.
