Tragus Jewelry
Solid 14K gold and implant grade titanium pieces for the tragus. The smallest visible canvas in the ear.
The tragus is the small cartilage flap that sits in front of the ear canal. It is one of the most visible piercings on the ear because it faces the world directly, and it rewards restraint. Smaller pieces read clearly here, while larger or hanging jewelry tends to feel overworked.
At Piercing Lab Calgary, every tragus piercing is performed with a sterile single use needle and fitted with implant grade titanium or solid gold from the first appointment.
Why fit and styling matter
The tragus is the smallest visible canvas in the ear. Unlike the conch where jewelry plays the centerpiece, or the helix where pieces stack into a curation, the tragus performs best when one refined piece sits cleanly on its own. Four considerations shape every tragus fitting:
Bar length. The tragus is thinner cartilage than the conch but the inside of the flap needs clearance. Initial bars accommodate 4 to 8 weeks of swelling, then downsize.
Stone size. Pieces from 1.5mm to 3mm read best on the tragus. Anything larger competes with the natural shape of the flap and starts to look heavy.
Front facing design. The tragus faces forward, so only the front of the piece is visible. Choose pieces designed to be read straight on rather than from the side or in motion.
Minimal beats maximal. A single well chosen tragus stud will outperform a busy cluster nine times out of ten. The placement itself does the work, the jewelry plays a supporting role.
Jewelry material
We exclusively use implant grade titanium and solid gold suitable for long term wear and healing cartilage piercings.
Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136). The industry default for fresh piercings. Hypoallergenic and proven biocompatible. Anodised colour finishes remain safe in healing tissue.
Solid 14K or 18K gold. Nickel free alloyed gold for both fresh and healed piercings. Niori Jewelry, our in house line, is solid 14K gold across the full range.
Fashion jewelry materials are not used for new piercings at our studio.
Placement variations
The tragus is a single placement, but two variations are commonly distinguished:
Standard tragus. The classic placement through the centre of the cartilage flap. Works for most ear anatomies and supports the widest range of small studs.
Vertical tragus. A surface piercing that runs along the front face of the tragus rather than through it. Less common and harder to heal because it is technically a surface piercing.
We assess your tragus before any piercing decision. Some anatomies are too thin to pierce safely, in which case we will say so and suggest alternatives.
Healing and aftercare
Tragus piercings need 6 to 9 months to fully heal. The outside may look settled before the inside has finished, so aftercare runs the full window.
First 8 weeks. Saline rinse twice daily. Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing. Earbuds, phones, and masks all touch the tragus area and should be limited during early healing.
Weeks 4 to 8. Free downsize appointment with any Niori Jewelry purchase. The tragus benefits from downsizing because the initial bar protrudes noticeably on such a small placement.
Months 3 to 9. Continue saline rinses as the inside of the piercing continues to remodel.

Book your tragus piercing at Piercing Lab Calgary
Every appointment includes anatomy assessment, sterile single use needle, implant grade or solid gold jewelry from your first wear, and a one on one walkthrough of healing and aftercare. The tragus is one of the more anatomy dependent placements, so we recommend a brief consultation before booking if you are unsure whether your tragus is suited to the piercing.
Frequently asked
How long does a tragus piercing take to heal?
Most tragus piercings need 6 to 9 months. The outside may look settled earlier, but the inside continues to remodel for the full window.
Is a tragus piercing painful?
The tragus is a thin section of cartilage, so the piercing is typically quick. Most clients describe a brief sharp sensation rather than prolonged pain. The deeper challenge is the position, since the tragus sits close to the ear canal and the sound of the needle passing through can feel louder than the actual sensation.
What size jewelry suits a tragus piercing?
Tragus piercings perform best with smaller pieces, typically 1.5mm to 3mm. Anything larger starts to overwhelm the small surface area of the cartilage and can look top heavy. The placement is naturally visible, so the jewelry does not need to be large to be noticed.
Can I wear earbuds with a new tragus piercing?
Earbuds press directly against or near the tragus and should be avoided for at least the first 8 weeks. Over ear headphones may also catch the piercing depending on fit. If you depend on earbuds daily, plan for the healing window before booking.
Why do tragus piercings sometimes reject?
Tragus rejection is usually caused by jewelry that is too long, too heavy, or worn before the piercing has fully settled. Sleeping on the piercing, frequent earbud use, or trauma during healing can also push the body to reject. Choosing implant grade or solid gold jewelry, downsizing on schedule, and protecting the piercing during early healing all reduce rejection risk.
Can I get both tragus piercings at once?
Yes, we can do both tragus piercings in one appointment if your anatomy is suited on both sides. Healing two piercings at the same time means you will not have a comfortable side to sleep on for several weeks, so some clients prefer to do them one at a time.
Do you offer consultation before a tragus piercing?
Yes. Tragus anatomy varies significantly between people, and not every tragus is thick enough or projected enough to pierce safely. A brief consultation lets us confirm your anatomy supports the piercing before you commit to booking.
Can I bring my own jewelry for a new tragus piercing?
For healed tragus piercings we install outside jewelry that meets our material standards. For new piercings we use only studio supplied implant grade titanium or solid gold.
