Forward Helix Jewelry
Solid 14K gold and implant grade titanium pieces for the forward helix. The cartilage placement closest to the face.
The forward helix sits at the top of the ear above the tragus, where the cartilage curls forward toward the face. Unlike the rest of the helix which runs along the outer rim, the forward helix faces inward, framing the side of the face in a way no other cartilage placement does.
At Piercing Lab Calgary, every forward helix piercing is performed with a sterile single use needle and fitted with implant grade titanium or solid gold from the first appointment.
Why fit and styling matter
The forward helix is the cartilage placement that sits visually closest to the face. It frames your profile in a way that the standard helix and other ear placements cannot, which means the jewelry choice affects how the entire side of your face reads. Four considerations:
Bar length. Forward helix piercings need a shorter initial bar than mid helix because the cartilage section is thinner. Initial bars accommodate swelling for 4 to 8 weeks, then downsize.
Small scale only. Forward helix pieces should be 1.5mm to 3mm. The placement is small and close to the face; larger pieces overwhelm the proportions and start to read costume rather than refined.
Face framing intention. Choose the piece for how it reads from a three-quarter profile angle, not from the side. The forward helix is visible from straight-on and from the front, in conversation and in photos.
Stacking in miniature. Many face-framing curations are built with two or three forward helix piercings stacked vertically in 4 to 5mm spacing. Smaller scale than mid helix stacking, but the same principle.
Jewelry material
We exclusively use implant grade titanium and solid gold suitable for long term wear and healing cartilage piercings.
Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136). The industry default for fresh piercings. Hypoallergenic and proven biocompatible. Anodised colour finishes remain safe in healing tissue.
Solid 14K or 18K gold. Nickel free alloyed gold for both fresh and healed piercings. Niori Jewelry, our in house line, is solid 14K gold across the full range.
Fashion jewelry materials are not used for new piercings at our studio.
Placement variations
The forward helix supports two main configurations:
Single forward helix. One piercing at the upper edge of the cartilage where it meets the side of the face. The most common configuration.
Triple forward helix. Three small piercings vertically stacked in the same forward helix area, typically with matching minimal studs in graduated sizes. A signature look that requires sufficient cartilage real estate and is anatomy dependent.
Healing and aftercare
Forward helix piercings need 6 to 9 months to fully heal. Slightly faster than mid helix because the channel is shorter, but still cartilage healing rules apply.
First 8 weeks. Saline rinse twice daily. Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing. Keep skincare, makeup, and hair products off the area.
Weeks 4 to 8. Free downsize appointment with any Niori Jewelry purchase.
Months 3 to 9. Continue saline rinses as the inside of the piercing continues to remodel.
Full instructions on our aftercare page.

Book your forward helix piercing at Piercing Lab Calgary
Every appointment includes anatomy assessment, sterile single use needle, implant grade titanium or solid gold jewelry from your first wear, and a one on one walkthrough of healing and aftercare. For triple forward helix stacks we recommend a curated ear consultation to plan spacing on your specific anatomy before piercing the first.
Frequently asked
How long does a forward helix piercing take to heal?
Most forward helix piercings need 6 to 9 months to fully heal. Slightly faster than mid helix because the channel is shorter, but still cartilage healing rules apply.
How is the forward helix different from the regular helix?
The forward helix sits at the very top of the ear curving toward the face. The regular (mid) helix runs along the outer ear rim. They are different cartilage sections with different anatomy, healing characteristics, and styling logic.
What is a triple forward helix?
Three forward helix piercings stacked vertically in the same section of cartilage, typically with matching minimal studs. The signature face-framing curated ear look. Requires sufficient cartilage space and consultation.
Can I get a triple forward helix in one session?
Anatomy permitting, yes, but the healing load is significant. Many clients prefer to pierce one at a time, with 8 to 12 weeks between piercings to let each settle before adding the next.
Will glasses or sunglasses interfere with my forward helix piercing?
Glasses arms typically clear the forward helix area, but thick frames or wraparound sunglasses can rub. Test your frames before piercing if you wear them daily.
What jewelry size works best for forward helix?
Small. 1.5mm to 3mm reads cleanest, with 2mm being the most common starting choice. Anything larger competes with the face proportions rather than complementing them.
Do you offer consultation before a forward helix piercing?
Yes, especially for triple stacks. Forward helix anatomy varies significantly, and not every ear has enough cartilage real estate for multiple piercings. We assess before recommending.
Can I bring my own jewelry for a new forward helix piercing?
For healed piercings we install outside jewelry that meets our material standards. For new piercings we use only studio supplied implant grade titanium or solid gold.
