Helix Jewelry

A professional piercing studio specializing in implant grade titanium, solid 14K gold, and ear curation designed for healed and new piercings.

The helix runs along the upper outer rim of the ear, one of the most styled placements in modern piercing. It rewards careful fit, balanced weight, and clean material choices.

At Piercing Lab Calgary, every helix piercing is performed with a sterile single use needle and fitted with implant grade titanium or solid gold from the first appointment.

Why fit and styling matter

Helix placements pass through cartilage, which makes jewelry decisions more consequential than at the lobe. Four considerations shape every fitting:

Bar length. Fresh helix piercings need a longer bar to accommodate swelling for the first 4 to 8 weeks. After swelling settles, downsizing prevents snagging and reduces irritation.

Weight. Heavy charms and dangles apply downward force on cartilage. We recommend lightweight ends for the first 12 months.

Disc size. A flat disc that sits flush behind the ear lowers risk of catching on hair, glasses, or pillows.

Stacking. The helix is the most stackable placement in the ear. Multiple helix piercings, or helix paired with flat and forward helix, form the foundation of most curated ear designs.

Jewelry material

We exclusively use implant grade titanium and solid gold suitable for long term wear and healing cartilage piercings.

Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136). The industry default for fresh piercings. Hypoallergenic and proven biocompatible. Anodised colour finishes remain safe in healing tissue.

Solid 14K or 18K gold. Nickel free alloyed gold for both fresh and healed piercings. Niori Jewelry, our in house line, is solid 14K gold across the full range.

Fashion jewelry materials are not used for new piercings at our studio.

Placement variations

The helix covers a long stretch of cartilage with three commonly named sections:

Forward helix. Upper section above the tragus, closer to the face. Suited to small studs and minimal pieces.

Mid helix. Outer rim, the most common helix placement. Supports a wide range of jewelry from gem ends to statement pieces.

High helix. Near the apex of the ear, often paired with mid helix for a stacked curation.

We assess your ear before any piercing decision and will suggest alternatives if your anatomy is not suited to a particular section.

Healing and aftercare

Helix piercings need 6 to 12 months to fully heal. The outside may look settled before the inside has finished, so aftercare runs the full window.

First 8 weeks. Saline rinse twice daily. Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing. Keep skincare and hair products off the area.

Weeks 4 to 8. Free downsize appointment with any Niori Jewelry purchase.

Months 3 to 12. Continue saline rinses as the inside of the piercing continues to remodel.

Full instructions on our aftercare page.

Frequently asked

How long does a helix piercing take to heal?

Most helix piercings need 6 to 12 months. The outside may look settled earlier, but the inside continues to remodel for the full window.

Can I sleep on my new helix piercing?

Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing for at least the first 8 weeks. Sleep pressure is the most common cause of helix healing bumps.

What jewelry is safe for a new helix piercing?

Implant grade titanium that meets ASTM F136 standards, or solid 14K and 18K gold. Fashion jewelry materials are not used for new piercings at our studio.

When should I downsize my helix piercing?

Typically between 4 and 8 weeks after the piercing, once swelling has fully settled. Downsizing is free with any Niori Jewelry purchase.

Can I get multiple helix piercings at once?

Yes, depending on anatomy and pain tolerance. Two helix piercings in one appointment is common. Three or more requires consultation, since the healing load on cartilage increases significantly.

What is the difference between forward helix and mid helix?

Forward helix sits above the tragus, closer to the face. Mid helix sits along the outer rim, the most common helix placement. They pair well together in a curated ear.

Do you offer consultation before a helix piercing?

Yes. We recommend a curated ear consultation before any cartilage piercing, especially when planning multiple placements or building toward a long term curation.

Can I bring my own jewelry for a new helix piercing?

For healed helix piercings we install outside jewelry that meets our material standards. For new piercings we use only studio supplied implant grade titanium or solid gold.
