Tongue Piercing

Implant grade titanium internally threaded barbells for the tongue. Fast healing, but the mouth is a demanding environment that rewards careful jewelry choice and consistent aftercare.

The tongue piercing sits vertically through the muscle of the tongue, with the entry on the top surface and the exit on the underside. The center placement is the most common and most flattering, traditionally positioned slightly behind the tongue tip and centered on the midline. Variations include lateral tongue (slightly to one side of center) and tongue web piercings through the frenulum under the tongue.

At Piercing Lab Calgary, every tongue piercing is performed with a sterile single use needle and fitted with an implant grade titanium internally threaded barbell. Anatomy assessment is essential before booking, because not every tongue has the right vein placement and tissue depth for safe piercing.

Why fit and styling matter

Tongue piercings demand more precision than any other oral piercing because they live in a constantly active, wet, high-bacterial environment with significant daily forces from eating and talking. Four considerations:

Anatomy assessment is non-negotiable. Not every tongue has the vein placement, tissue depth, and structure for safe center piercing. We check for major veins on the underside of the tongue, assess tongue thickness, and identify any anatomy that contraindicates the piercing. If your anatomy is not suited, we will tell you and recommend alternatives like tongue web or lateral placement.

Titanium only, gold never. Solid gold jewelry is unsafe for the tongue. The oral environment combined with daily bite force damages gold jewelry over time, and gold can release trace ions into saliva. We use implant grade titanium exclusively, whether fresh or fully healed.

Downsizing is critical. The initial jewelry installed is intentionally longer than the final size to accommodate significant swelling that happens in the first 7 to 14 days. Once swelling resolves, the jewelry must be downsized or it will swing against teeth and damage enamel. We schedule downsize appointments for every fresh tongue piercing client.

Aftercare protocol is strict. The healing window is 4 to 6 weeks. During that window, alcohol, smoking, kissing, oral sex, and sharing utensils are off limits. Mouthwash rinses after every meal are required. Skipping aftercare on a tongue piercing causes faster problems than skipping aftercare on any other placement.

Jewelry material

We exclusively use implant grade titanium for tongue piercings. No gold, no surgical steel, no costume jewelry.

Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136). The only material safe for long term oral wear. Hypoallergenic, biocompatible, and resistant to the bacterial and acidic environment of the mouth. Internally threaded barbells (smooth shaft, threaded inside the ends) prevent any threading from contacting tongue tissue during installation.

No gold for tongue piercings. Solid gold is significantly softer than titanium. Bite force damages gold ends, and trace gold ions can leach into saliva over time. Gold is reserved for ear, nose, and lip placements where it is safe to wear.

Placement variations

We offer three tongue piercing variations:

Center tongue. The classic placement, sitting vertically on the midline of the tongue, slightly behind the tip. Most common and most flattering. Heals in 4 to 6 weeks.

Lateral tongue. A center-style piercing positioned slightly to one side of the midline rather than dead center. Same healing profile as center placement but reads as more subtle and angled.

Tongue web (frenulum). A small piercing through the thin web of tissue under the tongue connecting it to the floor of the mouth. Healing 3 to 6 weeks. Anatomy dependent. Smaller jewelry, less impact on speech and eating during healing.

We do not offer snake eyes or horizontal tongue piercings, which are widely considered unsafe by the Association of Professional Piercers because they split tongue muscle tissue and dramatically increase the risk of tooth damage.

Healing and aftercare

Tongue piercings heal in 4 to 6 weeks. The oral environment is fast-healing but demanding, so aftercare during this window is strict.

First 2 weeks. Significant swelling is normal. Eat cold, soft foods only. Rinse with non-alcoholic mouthwash diluted 50/50 with water for 30 seconds after every meal and before bed. Avoid smoking, alcohol, kissing, oral sex, sharing utensils, and any contact with another person's saliva. Sleep on your back if possible. Expect a mild temporary lisp for the first week.

Weeks 2 to 4. Downsize appointment. The initial barbell length accommodates swelling that has now resolved, so the jewelry needs to be replaced with a shorter shaft. Skipping this step causes tooth damage from the longer bar swinging against teeth.

Weeks 4 to 6. Continue diluted mouthwash rinses after meals. Most clients can resume normal eating and talking by this point. Reintroduce normal social activities cautiously, watching for any irritation.

Book your tongue piercing at Piercing Lab Calgary

Every appointment includes thorough anatomy assessment of vein placement and tissue depth, sterile single use needle, implant grade titanium internally threaded barbell from your first wear, and a one on one walkthrough of oral aftercare and the downsize timeline. Tongue piercings are anatomy-dependent, so we strongly recommend a brief consultation before booking to confirm your tongue anatomy supports the placement you want.

Frequently asked

How long does a tongue piercing take to heal?

Most tongue piercings heal in 4 to 6 weeks, faster than ear or facial piercings because oral mucous membrane regenerates quickly. The trade off is that the mouth is a harsh healing environment with constant saliva exposure, eating, talking, and bacterial flora. Aftercare during the first 4 weeks is non-negotiable for clean healing.

Will I have a lisp after getting my tongue pierced?

Most clients have a temporary mild lisp for the first 3 to 7 days while the tongue is swollen. Speech returns to normal as swelling subsides and the tongue adjusts to the jewelry. By week 2 most clients speak completely normally. If you have a profession that depends on clear speech, plan the piercing around a few days off.

What can I eat after a tongue piercing?

For the first 7 to 10 days stick to cold, soft foods. Smoothies, yogurt, ice cream, mashed potatoes, soft noodles, and cold soups are ideal. Avoid spicy, acidic, salty, or hot foods, which irritate the fresh piercing and prolong swelling. Avoid crunchy foods that can catch on the jewelry. Alcohol, smoking, and sharing utensils are off limits for the full 4 to 6 week healing window. After the first 2 weeks you can reintroduce normal foods gradually as comfort allows.

Why do you only use titanium for tongue piercings, not gold?

Solid gold jewelry is unsuitable for tongue piercings for two reasons. First, the oral environment combined with daily bite force damages gold jewelry. Gold is significantly softer than titanium and chips, scratches, and wears down against teeth. Second, gold can release trace ions into saliva over time, which is undesirable for long term oral wear. Implant grade titanium is the only material we install in tongue piercings, whether fresh or healed.

Will a tongue piercing damage my teeth or gums?

The risk exists but is significantly reduced with proper jewelry sizing and material. Long jewelry left in place after swelling subsides is the main cause of tooth chipping and gum recession, because the longer bar swings against teeth during talking and eating. Downsizing once swelling resolves is essential, not optional. We schedule a downsize appointment for every fresh tongue piercing client.

Why is downsizing the jewelry so important for tongue piercings?

The initial jewelry installed at the appointment is intentionally longer than the final size to accommodate the significant tongue swelling that happens in the first 7 to 14 days. Once swelling subsides, the jewelry becomes too long for the tongue thickness. The longer bar swings against teeth during eating and talking, and the bottom end protrudes uncomfortably. Downsizing to the correct settled length protects your teeth and is much more comfortable. We do this around the 2 to 4 week mark.

Do you offer snake eyes or horizontal tongue piercings?

No. Snake eyes piercings, also called venom piercings, pass a single horizontal bar across the tip of the tongue. They are widely considered unsafe by reputable piercers because the bar splits muscle tissue, restricts tongue movement, and dramatically increases tooth chipping and gum damage. The Association of Professional Piercers does not endorse this piercing. We offer center tongue, lateral tongue, and tongue web (frenulum) piercings, all performed with vertical placement through soft tissue rather than splitting horizontal muscle.

What is the aftercare protocol for a tongue piercing?

Tongue aftercare differs from other piercings because the mouth is a wet environment. Rinse with non-alcoholic mouthwash diluted with water (50/50) for 30 seconds after every meal and before bed for the first 4 weeks. Saline rinses externally are not needed. Do not touch the jewelry. Avoid smoking, alcohol, kissing, oral sex, sharing utensils, and unprotected sleeping with a partner for the full healing window. Full instructions on our aftercare page.
