Eyebrow Piercing

Implant grade titanium curved barbells for the brow ridge. A directional accent that frames the eye and sets the tone for facial styling.

The eyebrow piercing sits along the brow ridge, most commonly on the outer third of the brow as a directional accent toward the temple, or at the mid brow as a more centered statement. It is one of the most recognizable facial piercings, established enough to feel familiar but still distinctive when placed well. The piercing reads as deliberate styling rather than passive ornament, and pairs naturally with septum, nostril, or paired across both brows for symmetric facial curation.

At Piercing Lab Calgary, every eyebrow piercing is performed with a sterile single use needle and fitted with an implant grade titanium curved barbell from the first appointment.

Why fit and styling matter

The eyebrow is a surface piercing, which means it passes through a flat plane of soft tissue rather than through cartilage. This affects both the piercing technique and the jewelry choice in important ways. Four considerations:

Curved barbell, not straight. The brow ridge curves naturally. A curved barbell follows that arc and sits close to the skin. Straight barbells lever against the tissue, increase migration risk, and protrude awkwardly. We use curved barbells exclusively for eyebrow piercings.

Gauge and length matter. 16ga is the standard for first piercings, with a 5/16 inch or 3/8 inch initial length to accommodate swelling for the first 4 to 6 weeks. Downsizing to the final settled length once swelling resolves is essential to prevent the jewelry from snagging or catching on brows.

Placement decides personality. Outer brow piercings read directional and contemporary. Mid brow piercings read bolder and more central. Paired piercings on both brows read as symmetric styling. We walk through the styling differences during consultation so the placement matches the look you want.

Surface piercings need monitoring. Even with proper placement and quality jewelry, surface piercings can be more reactive than cartilage piercings during healing. We schedule a downsize appointment around the 6 week mark to check progress and switch to a shorter shaft.

Jewelry material

We exclusively use implant grade titanium and solid gold suitable for long term wear and healing piercings.

Implant grade titanium (ASTM F136). The industry default and what we use for every fresh eyebrow piercing. Hypoallergenic, proven biocompatible, and essential for the surface piercing healing process.

Solid 14K or 18K gold. Available for fully healed eyebrow piercings. Decorative gem ends become available once the piercing is settled, typically at the 3 to 6 month mark.

Placement variations

The eyebrow has several configurations:

Outer brow. The most common placement, sitting on the outer third of the brow toward the temple. Reads as a directional accent and pairs cleanly with other facial piercings.

Mid brow. A more centered placement above the pupil. Reads bolder and more central than outer brow placements.

Paired eyebrow. Matching piercings on both sides for symmetric facial curation. Both done in the same appointment so healing aligns.

Vertical eyebrow. A less common variation where the curved barbell runs vertically through the brow rather than horizontally. Anatomy dependent and not suited to every brow.

Healing and aftercare

Eyebrow piercings heal in 8 to 12 weeks. The soft tissue channel heals faster than cartilage placements but the surface nature of the piercing means consistent aftercare matters through the full window.

First 4 weeks. Saline rinse twice daily. Avoid touching the jewelry. Keep eyebrow products, makeup, and skincare away from the piercing site. Sleep with the piercing side facing up where possible.

Weeks 4 to 6. Free downsize appointment with any Niori Jewelry purchase. The eyebrow benefits significantly from downsizing because the initial bar accommodates swelling that has now resolved.

Weeks 6 to 12. Continue saline rinses. Most clients can resume gentle eyebrow grooming around the piercing site by the 12 week mark, but waxing and threading should wait until fully healed.

Frequently asked

How long does an eyebrow piercing take to heal?

Most eyebrow piercings heal in 8 to 12 weeks. The channel passes through the soft tissue of the brow ridge, which heals faster than cartilage placements like helix or conch. The surface nature of the piercing means the channel itself needs to settle fully before bumps and irritation resolve, so consistent twice daily saline rinses through the full window matter.

Which side or position of my brow should I get pierced?

The most common placements are the outer third of the brow (outer brow piercing, reads as a directional accent toward the temple) and mid brow (more centered above the pupil, reads bolder). Either side works. We assess the natural slope of your brow and how the piercing will sit when you raise your eyebrows during consultation, so the placement still looks balanced when your face is animated.

Will an eyebrow piercing interfere with my eyebrow makeup or microblading?

Daily eyebrow products like pencil, gel, and powder are fine to apply around the piercing once it has fully healed, as long as you avoid getting product directly onto the entry and exit points. Microblading and brow lamination can still be done after the piercing heals, though we recommend telling your brow technician about the piercing so they can work around it carefully. During the initial 8 to 12 week healing window, keep all brow products off the piercing entirely.

Can I get both eyebrows pierced in the same appointment?

Yes. Paired eyebrow piercings on either side of the face are a balanced choice for clients who want symmetry rather than directional asymmetry. We do both piercings in one appointment so healing happens on the same timeline. Sleeping arrangements are slightly more involved with two fresh facial piercings, so we walk through this during the consultation.

What is the difference between an eyebrow and anti-eyebrow piercing?

An eyebrow piercing sits on or just above the brow ridge. An anti-eyebrow sits below the eye on the upper cheekbone, typically at the outer edge of the eye socket. Despite the name, they are different placements with different anatomy considerations and different healing profiles. Anti-eyebrow piercings have a higher migration rate and are not something every studio performs. We currently offer standard eyebrow piercings only.

Will my eyebrow piercing leave a noticeable scar if I remove it later?

Like any piercing, removing the jewelry leaves two small marks at the entry and exit points. For most clients these settle into very small dots that are hidden under brow hair once the piercing closes. If the piercing migrated significantly before removal, the scar can be more noticeable. Removing the piercing during the initial healing window also tends to leave clearer marks than removing it after years of healed wear.

Why are eyebrow piercings done with curved barbells instead of straight?

The brow ridge is not flat. A curved barbell follows the natural arc of the tissue, which keeps the jewelry sitting close to the skin without pressing against either side of the channel. Straight barbells in an eyebrow piercing tend to lever against the tissue, increase migration risk, and look protruding rather than seated. Curved is the standard for a reason.

Can I get my eyebrows waxed, threaded, or tweezed after the piercing heals?

Yes, once fully healed. We recommend waiting until the piercing has settled past the 12 week window before any aggressive brow grooming directly on the piercing site. After healing, gentle tweezing around the piercing is fine. Threading and waxing should be done carefully by a technician who knows the piercing is there, so they can work around it without pulling on the jewelry.
